What is your background? What got you to where you are now?
25-year corporate employee for American Family Insurance. Earned Bachelor’s degree in business management while working. My entire career has been spent in the insurance industry.
What business do you own/work for?
Vicki Wagener Agency, LLC (American Family).
What made you decide to start your business?
I was ready for a new challenge and wanted to be directly rewarded for the effort I put forth. Self employment and sales has satisfied both if these goals.
What is your biggest accomplishment so far in life and why?
The fact that my 16-year old daughter has seen me work hard her entire life (as a single mom for a portion of that time) and she emulates my work ethic in her studies. She will accomplish far more than I have in her life.
What is your biggest accomplishment in your business and why?
The American Star Award is a customer service award based upon survey responses by my clients. My clients helped me earn the award as soon as I was eligible. The agency I took over did not have this status and it was my number one goal.
What is the biggest obstacle that you have face while in business? What is the biggest fear that you have for your business?
There are no obstacles, only opportunities. You need to capitalize on opportunities in the right way at the right time.
Early on I had a fear of failure. 2 1/2 years later I have no fear.
If you could give one quote to live by, what would it be?
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”
What does Madison need to encourage entrepreneurs to stay and grow their businesses?
A strong program to support local business. Tax write offs for new business owners since the first few years are usually tough. Free or low cost advertising which is one of the largest expenses..
What words of advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Have courage and believe in yourself. When I started my business, I told myself failure is not an option. Do whatever it takes to avoid failure.
