Doyenne Group (DG): What business do you own?

Megan Monday (MM) and Jet Waller (JW): Love Wisconsin

DG: What is your role/title within your business?

MM & JW: Co-founders

DG: What is the goal/mission of your business?

MM & JW: Love Wisconsin is an online publishing platform that uses storytelling and technology to bring about a more connected, compassionate and engaged Wisconsin.

DG: What is your background? What got you to where you are now?

MM & JW:
We (Megan and Jet) both come from backgrounds in art, documentary, and interactive media. We met in 2009 through a community art project, and soon after started collaborating on short films and multimedia art shows. We moved our media work online, and our first social media campaign was called “Citizen Voices Matter”, addressing environmental concerns in our state. We founded a company together, Metta Monday Creative, to focus on content, brand, and messaging work for clients. But then, towards the end of 2013, we dreamed up a vision for self-produced documentary storytelling project: Love Wisconsin. Love Wisconsin launched in 2015 and has since grown to almost 100,000 followers and is now its own non-profit.

DG: What made you decide to start your business?

MM & JW: Love Wisconsin is rooted in our love of documentary storytelling. We are both really passionate about sharing stories that open up perspectives. It’s the “walk a mile in another (wo)man’s shoes” idea. For us, when someone with a different lived experience invites us in and shares a part of their life by telling us their story… that’s not only an incredible gift, it’s pure magic. It illuminates the world and deepens our understanding of it. So we want to build all our projects that way – creating opportunities to learn, be curious about one another, and to share.

DG: What is your biggest accomplishment in your business and why?

MM & JW: Launching a publishing platform from scratch! We knew how to produce compelling stories, but creating the multi-faceted container for them has been a great ride. Our ambitions for (and expectations of) this project have really grown over the past two years, so we keep setting our sights on the next vista. Right now our next step is to create a separate space for real conversations about the stories.

DG: If you could give one quote to live by, what would it be?

MM & JW:
How about two?
“We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” J.K. Rowling
“The stories we tell literally shape our world. If you want to change the world, you need to change the story.” – Michael Margolis

DG: What is one thing that people may not know about you?

MM & JW: We have a cowbell (shaped like a deer head) in our office to ring-a-ding-ding at success moments.

DG: What words of advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

MM & JW:
Growing a business from scratch isn’t always an easy or straightforward path. Don’t be afraid to do what scares you most. Often that is what is standing between you and your own success. – Jet

Find a practice to help you center and ride through the crazy/scary bits, because it probably will get crazy. So find some practice – be it yoga, meditation, signing, improv comedy – just something that you can drop into and shut off ‘entrepreneur’s monkey mind’. However ambitious you are or demanding your enterprise gets, we all must remember we are human and need to nurture our beastly bodies and minds for the long-haul. – Meg

DG: What does Madison need to encourage entrepreneurs to stay and grow their businesses?

MM & JW:
More support for and awareness of our business incubators and other start-up resources. More support for / awareness of equity-in-entrepreneurship organizations like Doyenne, the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce, the Latino Chamber of Commerce, the Black Business Expo, and others.

Better support for our teachers, public schools, and universities.
